Email Deluge Continues with No End in Sight, IDC Says |
|
October 10, 2000
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ Email remains the killer app
for the Internet, evidenced by the many opportunities and challenges facing
providers and users of email. Understanding how and where email usage will
occur in the future is the focus of a new IDC study titled Email Usage
Forecast and Analysis, 2000-2005.
According to IDC, the number of emails sent on an average day is expected
to hit 10 billion worldwide this year. By 2005, this will more than triple to
a staggering 35 billion emails sent daily. In addition, Web browsers will
finally surpass all other primary ways of accessing email mailboxes in North
America this year.
"Like a heavy rain, escalating email usage can be a blessing or a curse
depending on how prepared we and our environments are for them," said Mark
Levitt, research director for IDC's Collaborative Computing program.
"Effective planning for access, routing, storage, scanning, and related
solutions for dealing with the email deluge requires a deep understanding of
how email usage will evolve over time."
IDC's recently published Email Usage Forecast and Analysis, 2000-2005 (IDC
#B23011) provides key statistics for email usage that will help companies
supplying email-related solutions and companies using email understand the
various ways that email usage is growing. It features a 10-year market view
(1995-2005) covering the following for North America: email mailboxes and
users by type (corporate, hosted, business, and consumer); primary email
mailbox access methods (POP, IMAP, Web browser, and proprietary); and sent
email volumes by purpose (business and personal). The study also provides
worldwide forecasts for email mailboxes by type (all and hosted) and sent
email volumes for 1995-2005, as well as Western Europe and Asia/Pacific
forecasts for email mailboxes and sent email volumes for 2000 and 2005. This
study focuses on overall email usage statistics and key forecast assumptions
and does not provide information about individual companies in the email
industry.
